Beware of the Antivirus 2009 SCAM!!!
Just
in the last two weeks I have had over a dozen customers come to me with
virus problems. They were browsing the Internet when all of a
sudden a warning comes up telling them that they have been infected
with an outrageous number of viruses. Of course you can
conveniently click a link and have all of this taken care of, for a
cost of course. These criminal programmers have gone a step
further by making their software appear to be a windows program on top
of that. I am talking about a program called Antivirus 2009.
Too many home users panic when they see the pop-ups from this
software and because it appears to be a trusted windows program, they
click away.
A couple of things to be aware of when browsing the Internet:
1. Windows programs do not pop up and offer to protect you for a fee.
2. There are no windows programs that informs the user they are infected with a virus.
Once
you are infected with this software, your Internet browsing experience
becomes a real nightmare. When you try to browse to a site to
install a program that will remove this software, you will receive a
warning that the site you are attempting to visit is a dangerous site.
Your antivirus software will probably stop updating and may stop
working alltogether.
Follow these steps to remove this software:
1.
Get a copy of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. You may have to
get this software downloaded from a computer that is not infected as I
had to do for my customers in every case. The Antivirus 2009
prevented me from downloading this software.
2. Once the
Malwarebytes' software is installed, open up task manager and
forcefully close all programs that are not necessary for your computer
to run. For reference, the following are typically services you
cannot or should not cancel in task manager: dllhost.exe,
CFSvcs.exe, svchost.exe, lsass.exe, services.exe, winlogon.exe,
explorer.exe, smss.exe, csrss.exe, spoolsv.exe, System, and System Idle
Process.
3. Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software and perform a full scan.
4.
Now ensure your antivirus software is worth having. I
recommend you use NOD32 if you are willing to spend about $30,
otherwise I would recommend AVAST Free Home Edition.
5. Install your antivirus software of choice if it is not already installed, update it, scan your entire computer.
6. Once that is done, I would recommend a boot time antivirus scan and then re-scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
All
software mentioned above can be found on the Links page. If you
are really serious about protecting your computer from these scams, buy
NOD32 Antivirus and Spyzooka. It will be the best investment you
make to protect your computer and personal information.
